Dollar Rises Against Yen as Unemployment Rate Declines

As U.S. initial jobless claims were reported to unexpectedly fell last week, the dollar advanced to a three-month high against the yen. The greenback was headed for its first monthly gain since June versus the currencies of major U.S. trading partners on speculation the Federal Reserve is moving closer to withdrawing stimulus measures as the economy recovers, pushing Treasury yields higher.

Sydney Celebrates New Year with Massive Fireworks

New Year arrived first in the South Pacific. At midnight local time (1100 GMT) fireworks were set off over Auckland’s Sky Tower in New Zealand. A massive fireworks display has taken place in Sydney, Australia, with some 5,000kg of explosives sent up around around the famous harbour bridge.

2010 is starting not only a New Year, but a new decade coming up with special goals seems even more appropriate at this time of year. Traditionally, one of the ways most people ring in the New Year is by making resolutions, whether they have a track record of keeping them or not.

Since a bomber’s attempt to blow up an airplane the Obama administration has been fiercely on the defense. The administration is operating in campaign mode – issuing statements, messaging through press releases and reactively hitting the airwaves while the President birdies and bogeys his way to the bottom of things.

Wednesday the federal government said that it will take majority control of troubled auto lender GMAC and provide an additional $3.8 billion in aid to the company as it is unable to raise money from private investors.
